A DAY AND NIGHT IN THE DESERT: Spanish Edition

I just discovered that there is a a Spanish edition of my book A DAY AND NIGHT IN THE DESERT (Capstone/PictureWindow Books, 2015). It is called Un Dia y Una Noche en el Desierto (2021). Look for it at the Capstone website or on Amazon. Here is the description on Amazon.

Tic-tac, tic-tac.

Tap-tap, tap-tap! A woodpecker welcomes morning to the Sonoran Desert, and with it, award-winning author/illustrator Caroline Arnold starts the clock ticking on one 24-hour cycle of animal activity in the desert habitat. Cut-paper illustrations, story-like text, and features such as sidebars, fun facts, and a glossary educate as they entertain.

GRINNELL COLLEGE LIBRARY--A Complete Collection of My Books

Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa.

I am proud that Burling Library, the Grinnell College library in Grinnell, Iowa, has all of my books in its collection. To my knowledge, it is the only institution that has copies of every one of my published books. (Note: the Kerlan Collection at the University of Minnesota, one of the few national archives of children's books, has many of my books, as well as the accompanying manuscripts and correspondence. They also have my original art used for the books I illustrated.)

Five Nests (1980), my first published book.

I graduated from Grinnell College in 1966 with a B.A. in Art. My first book for children, Five Nests (E.P. Dutton) was published in 1980 and the publisher sent a copy of the book to the college library. Since then I have been sending copies of my books as they have come out. The books are kept in the Special Collections Room of Burling Library on the ground floor of the library along with books by other Grinnell College graduates.

Burling Library, Grinnell College.

I am the author of 170 books for children. Most are illustrated by other people. But between 2006 and 2015 I illustrated 16 of my books published by PictureWindow Books (Capstone). On my recent trip to Grinnell I brought 16 giclee prints of illustrations from those books--one from each book--and donated them to the library. (See list below.) I am glad to have them become part of the Grinnell Library collection. I thank Christopher Jones, the librarian in charge of Special Collections, for making my books and art available to students and users of the college library.

Giclee prints of cut-paper illustrations by Caroline Arnold for the following books are in the Grinnell College Library:

Children's book illustrations on exhibit at the Morris Graves Museum, Eureka, CA.
I'm just back from Eureka, California, and the incomparable Humboldt County Children's Author Festival--celebrating its 50th year! The first event was a reception at the beautiful Morris Graves Art Museum (formerly a Carnegie Library).

With giclee prints of illustrations from my books A Day and Night on the Prairie (Capstone 2015) (top), and A Day and Night in the Desert (Capstone, 2015) (bottom)
Prints of two of my illustrations were on exhibit in the Youth Gallery along with art by other participating author/illustrators. Many thanks to Lucy Quinby for coordinating the show!

Book Review in Grinnell Magazine

I am pleased to have my books reviewed in the summer issue of the Grinnell Magazine on page 15. I studied art and literature at Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa, and graduated with a major in Art. An almost complete collection of my books can be found in the alumni section of the college library.
Here's the announcement of my recent books in the Grinnell Magazine:

A Day and Night in the …
Prolific children’s book
author/illustrator Caroline Scheaffer Arnold ’66

From the habitat series: A Day and Night in the Rain Forest, A Day and Night in the Desert, A Day and Night on the Prairie, and A Day and Night in the Forest (Capstone: Picture Window Books, 2015). From the animal series: A Zebra’s World, A Panda’s World, A Polar Bear’s World, and A Penguin’s World (Capstone: Picture Window Books, 2015). Book Signing: American Library Association Conference, San Francisco

Signing A Day and Night in the Forest in the Capstone Booth, ALA, San Francisco
The American Library Association Conference met in San Francisco at the Moscone Convention Center June 25-30, 2015 and I spent two very full and exciting days in the Exhibit Halls signing books, meeting friends, and roaming the aisles to attempt at view all the new books. In the Capstone booth, on Saturday, June 26, I signed A Day and Night in the Forest, one of four new books in the Caroline Arnold’s Habitats series. There was a long line and I signed furiously until all the books were gone. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet librarians and fans from all over and I thank Jennifer Glidden, the marketing manager at Capstone, for making all the arrangements, taking photographs, and for helping everything go smoothly. I enjoyed the chance to meet the other Capstone people in the booth as well and to chat with editor Michelle Bisson.
Outside the Moscone Convention Center, San Francisco
The ALA convention was also an opportunity to meet with my agent, Andrea Brown, with whom I had a delicious lunch, and my editor at Charlesbridge, which will be publishing my book Living Fossils next year. I have already seen the proof pages with terrific illustrations by Andrew Plant. And I stopped by the StarWalk Kids booth to find out the latest news about the StarWalk Kids digital library, which includes many of my older books. Their catalogue, which continues to grow, now has more than 500 titles!

I went to the convention with my friends and fellow authors Joanne Rocklin and Susan Meyers (who both live in the Bay Area) and as we roamed the aisles we kept running into many of our other author friends as well as many of the librarians we have gotten to know over the years. That is one of the great things about ALA–the chance to meet and renew friendships, all in the midst of thousands of new and wonderful books from publishers big and small. I came home with a bag full of books, catalogues, posters and more. I only go to ALA when it meets in California, which occurs every five years or so. This conference brought back memories of my very first ALA, also in San Francisco, back in 1981, when I was a new author. I remember being overwhelmed by the wealth of books and publishers. I still am.

CAROLINE ARNOLD’S HABITATS: A Day and Night in the Rain Forest, Desert, Prairie and Forest--New Series Written and Illustrated by Caroline Arnold

My new books are just out from PictureWindow Books (Capstone)!  The series, Caroline Arnold’s Habitats, includes four titles, A Day and Night in the Rain Forest, A Day and Night in the Desert, A Day and Night on the Prairie, and A Day and Night in the Forest.  Like my earlier PWB series, Caroline Arnold’s Animals, the books are illustrated with my own cut-paper collage art. The large format (10 x 10 inches) makes them perfect for reading aloud in a classroom or library or for reading alone to a young child. Fascinating extra facts appear as sidebars and in the extensive back matter.

Each book follows a 24 hour cycle of activity, highlighting the role of each animal in its habitat and how the habitat supports a variety of life. The illustrations progress from daylight to darkness to daylight again, visually supporting the progression of activity through the day and night.

The Caroline Arnold’s Habitats books are available in both a hardcover library binding and in a paperback edition. You can go to my website to find Common Core connections to each book, suggested projects and activities, and links to the other titles in the series.

ALA San Diego, January 2011

A week ago I spent a day at the winter American Library Association meetings in San Diego signing my books A Polar Bear’s World and A Bald Eagle’s World in the Capstone booth. I always love the opportunity to meet the librarians and teachers who are using my books with children and to see them happily taking my books home with them to add to their libraries and classrooms. When I wasn’t signing, I was cruising the aisles to see friends, read new books in other publishers’ booths, and collect catalogues, free posters and other goodies. In all, it was a great day!
