ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of MY FRIEND FROM OUTER SPACE

Celebrating the publication of MY FRIEND FROM OUTER SPACE.

It has been one year since the publication of my book MY FRIEND FROM OUTER SPACE, illustrated with charming graphic art by my granddaughter, Paige Arnold, and of our celebration of the book with family and friends.

Since then, I have shared the book with numerous school groups during author visits and worked with a class of 6^th graders as they created their own graphic picture books inspired by MY FRIEND FROM OUTER SPACE. 

I have been pleased that children are still enjoying the story, just as they did forty years ago when the book was first published, then with limited color illustrations. I hope that this new book will continue to be enjoyed by children for years to come!

MY FRIEND FROM OUTER SPACE. In this new graphic picture book Sherry tries to convince her friend that she comes from outer space. But does she? Join Sherry and her friend as they zoom through space at a zillion miles an hour. Here are some activities you can do after reading the book.

ACTIVITIES

1. Let’s pretend. Pretending is a good way to get an idea for a story. Write or tell your own story.

2. Make up your own language. What do you think Glug, flug, Tinbambam means in the story?

3. Make your own space ship with a cardboard box.

4. Create your own outer space costume. Do you look like a monster from outer space?

5. Design a quilt square from a scene in the book. Make a class quilt.

6. Create a comic strip. Put the words in speech balloons.

7. Make a model of the planetary system. What planets did Sherry and her friend see in outer space?

8. Perform a puppet play of the story. Make stick puppets or paper bag puppets.

My book, My Friend from Outer Space, has now been translated into Spanish and is available on Amazon. Mi Amiga del Espacio is available in both paperback and as a Kindle ebook.

CELEBRATE BOOKS IN TRANSLATION with SCBWI and my book in Spanish, EL TERRIBLE HODAG

EL TERRIBLE HODAG, is one of the books featured on the SCBWI reading list for the month of September. Hurray! The theme is "Celebrate Books in Translation". 

In honor of #WorldKidLitMonth, an annual celebration of world literature for children and young adults, we are celebrating our PAL members who have translated books into English, or who have had their books translated into other languages. So get ready to read the world through kids' book in translation!

EL TERRIBLE HODAG (StarWalk Kids, 2018) was first published in English as THE TERRIBLE HODAG (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1989). It was translated to Spanish by Thomas Scheaffer. It is available as an ebook at Amazon.

VIRTUAL AUTHOR VISIT AT FRANKLIN MAGNET SCHOOL, Glendale, CA

On Tuesday, May 31, 2022, I had an excellent author visit at Franklin Magnet School in Glendale, California, as part of the Authors and Illustrators in the Schools program sponsored and organized by the Glendale Assistance League. I especially thank Linelle Vincenti and Kathy Blyth for all their support and making sure that everything ran smoothly. I was one of five authors at the school. I met with four groups of first graders, each class for about thirty minutes, sharing my books and my life as an author and answering questions from the students.

Franklin is a language immersion school with students learning Spanish, French, German and Italian. I managed to begin each presentation by greeting the students with Buenos Dias, Bonjour, Guten Tag or Buono Giorno, but otherwise gave my presentation in English. In the Spanish immersion class I shared two of my books that have been translated into Spanish, A Zebra’s World (El Munde de las Cebras )and Your Skeletal System (El Sistema Oseo.)

In the German class I shared several of the many books available on Amazon as Kindle books in German, including Giant Shark (Megahai). 

In the French class I showed a translation of A Platypus’ World (Le Monde de l'ornithorynque) that had been made for me on a visit to Ecole Bilingue in Berkeley when my granddaughter was a student there. Unfortunately, none of my books have been translated into Italian.

I talked about gardens–featuring my new book PLANTING A GARDEN IN ROOM 6: From Seeds to Salad, as well as my fiction book WIGGLE AND WAGGLE (reading the first story and singing the gardening song with my Wiggle and Waggle sock puppets), and sharing my miniature garden inspired by Mr. McGregor’s garden in PETER RABBIT by Beatrix Potter.

The mascot of Franklin School is the owl, and that prompted a discussion of my books about birds, including A BALD EAGLE’S WORLD, HATCHING CHICKS IN ROOM 6 and A Day and Night in the Forest (which has an owl on the cover.) I also showed the children my collection of feathers and my ostrich egg. 

Altogether, it was a full and satisfying day!
 

Books in Spanish Now at StarWalk Kids Media

As of October 1, 2015, books in Spanish are now available in the eBook collection at StarWalk Kids Media. They are designed to support English Language Learners in acquiring academic vocabulary in both English and Spanish, and to enable both English- and Spanish-speaking children to learn the same, Standards-aligned content together. A WARMER WORLD, Now in Korean

I recently received a copy of my book A WARMER WORLD translated into Korean.  I am always thrilled to see my books translated into other languages and often surprised to discover that what takes so many letters to write in English can be expressed more succinctly in another language.  Over the years a number of my books have been translated into other languages. Except for The Skeletal System (El Sistema Oseo), which is available from Lerner Publications, and A Zebra's World (El Mundo de las Cebras) available from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt School Publishers, the foreign language editions are available only in the countries where they have been published.
