<span style="color: black; font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13.5pt;">The following is from
the introduction of an article about the history of the National Federation of
Settlements by John E. Hansan, Ph.D.:

Settlement) on New York City’s Lower East Side. Over the next 15
years, settlement houses were established in cities as places where socially
motivated middle-class men and women could live, or “settle,” among the
poor. Settlement house staff resided in the same buildings in which
neighborhood residents participated in programs and activities. Living in close
proximity, settlement staff regarded the people who used the settlement as
“neighbors,” not “clients.” Jane

been influenced by the founders and staff of London’s Toynbee Hall and other
British social activists who believed that students and people of wealth should
“settle” in poverty-stricken neighborhoods both to provide services to help
improve the daily quality of life, as well as to evaluate conditions and work
for social reform. The settlements taught adult education and English language
classes, provided schooling for immigrants’ children, organized job clubs,
offered afterschool recreation, initiated public health services, and advocated
for improved housing for the poor and working classes.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13.5pt;">As explained above by Dr. Hansan, settlement houses were often called "neighborhood houses" with settlement house staff, like my social worker parents, regarding the people who came to the settlement house for classes and social services as "neighbors" not "clients". From the age of four, until I was ten, my family lived at North East Neighborhood House, a settlement house in Minneapolis. Before that, my father had been the director of another settlement house, Neighborhood House in Syracuse, NY.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13.5pt;">While the term "settlement house" is no longer common, many of the institutions that began as settlement houses still exist and have evolved to meet the current social service needs of their communities. North East Neighborhood House, founded in 1915, continues as East Side Neighborhood Services, in a new modern building just a few blocks up the street from the original building. That building has been converted to low-income apartments and has been placed on the National Historical Register. Settlement House Girl: Growing Up in the 1950s at North East Neighborhood House, Minneapolis, Minnesota is a memoir of my childhood there. Edith’s story to life and making it known to the wider world and for generations to come. The book is available at the Grinnell College Book Store.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">I played a small part in the evolution of this book.
Last spring I got an email from the alumni office at Grinnell College, (my alma
mater,1966). I learned that another alum, Monique Shore (1990), was working on
a children’s book biography of Edith Renfrow Smith. I had recently read about
Edith in the college magazine so I was already intrigued. Knowing that I
had published many children’s books, the alumni office asked if I
would be willing to give any advice to Monique, who was new to the publishing
world. Of course I agreed.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Monique had stayed in Grinnell after her graduation and became interested in local
history. She <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 16px;">works as a librarian at the town library. By the time I connected with her s<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt;">he had already done extensive research about Edith and her family,
interviewed Edith and her daughter in Chicago and in Grinnell, and located an
illustrator for the book. As I read Monique's manuscript I could see places where she
could make it even better—by adding more details in some cases, moving some
information to the back matter, and letting the illustrations tell the story in
lieu of long descriptions.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Since Monique lives in Iowa and I live in Los Angeles,
we met on Zoom. I had forgotten that the college yearbook is called The
Cyclone. During one of our meetings I
could hear the tornado watch siren as Monique hastily carried her computer to
the basement of her house. But nothing stopped the progress of the book.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The process of shaping the manuscript that I went
through with Monique was the same as when I am working on one of my own books
except that in this case I was wearing the editor’s hat. And in the end, all
the final decisions were made by Monique and Erica, with valuable input they got
from Edith and her daughter. (It is rare that a biographer has the opportunity
to get feedback from the subject of the book!) By mid-October the book was
almost ready to go off to the publisher and Monique asked me to help with the
proof reading—it is always good have a fresh pair of eyes to check one last
time. Although I found a few small things, the book was in great shape and
ready to go to the printer.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt;">And now the book is ready for the world at large. Edith comes alive on every page through Monique’s well chosen words and Erica’s beautiful
detailed illustrations. The story is a window on the life of a Black family in a small
Iowa town in the first half of the 20th<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt;"> century and later, on Edith’s adult
life in Chicago, where she lives today. Although written for children, <i style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt;">No One Is Better Than You<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt;"> is for all
ages, and not just for people in Iowa and Chicago, but everywhere. And the
theme is universal: No one is better than you. I highly recommend this book!

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The story of the creation of No One Is Better Than

to identify plants and wildlife in the garden. I was so impressed by the
student who spotted a dragonfly perched on one of the plants. I had to look
carefully to see it at all, and the dragonfly was so well camouflaged that even
in my photograph it is hard to spot.

It focuses on the time our family lived at the settlement house that
my father directed, as well as its influence on my life even after we moved to
our own house in South Minneapolis. My original intention in writing the book was
to explore the mid-20th century history of NENH and its role in the community
at a time when settlement houses like it were in transition to today’s social
service centers. But as I wrote down my memories and researched letters and
documents, I realized that it was really a story about me and my family set in
the context of a functioning settlement house and the surrounding neighborhood.
The book ends in the summer of 1966, after I have graduated from Grinnell College,
and the Scheaffer family heads to California. You can find the book on Amazon
but you have to search for Caroline Scheaffer Arnold (which Google keeps trying
to misspell!)

part of the settlement house movement that began in England in 1884 and was
brought to the US by people like Jane Addams at Hull House, in Chicago.
Settlement houses, often called neighborhood houses, provided social services in
immigrant and poor urban neighborhoods. NENH was supported by charitable donations and by the Community Chest (United Fund.) Activities were led by volunteers who
came from other parts of the city and by staff members who lived at the
settlement house.

At first my plan was to use it to feature my art, which is why the link is carolinearnoldart. But a little more than a year later I decided to expand the blog to include my writing as well and changed the name to Caroline Arnold Art and Books (the link is still carolinearnoldart) with the plan of putting up a new post once a week. (Typically the
posts go up on a Wednesday or Saturday--some weeks there are two.)
For me, this blog is a way to keep track of my book and art related
activities, including school and library visits, publishing, reviews,
activities for children and teachers, announcements of prizes and awards
and more. Since launching the blog I have posted more than 800 items that
have been viewed by more than 330,000 visitors!
Thanks to all of you who have been following this blog either on Google or by email. I appreciate your support.

(Note: The Comments section is no longer active. This year’s choice is excellent and a fitting book to celebrate.
five nestshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18291274724653706754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3120084091489549279.post-41927656465551925482023-11-14T08:00:00.000-08:002023-11-14T11:09:55.492-08:00SCBWI BOOKSTOP: Buy your copy of My Friend From Outer Space here!

The holidays are here! Australia. I have contributed a number of articles to The School Magazine over the years. Most recently, my story about sea turtles was republished in Blast Off last August. (The School Magazine is produced by the New South Wales Education Department and is read by school children all over Australia and, now that it is online, throughout much of the world.)

Flying to Sydney was out of the question for many contributors, including me. Instead, we were given the opportunity to attend online for a celebration of the wonderful contributions of writers and artists to The School Magazine, far and wide. Participants included authors from the United States, New Zealand, and as far away as Austria. (Because of the time change, the event was actually Sunday evening in California where I live.) While it took some time to get all the technology in order, the program began and we were introduced to the staff and treated to a summary of the history of The School Magazine, from its beginnings in 1916 to the present day. Here are a few examples of the changes that have taken place over the years.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzP4GrWo3RfRB0Fg4wViKBypoayGyE9PhhTTc3pD3RRyJWUxLob6zh0c76LH6SKW51A-Oatx074KdWiYJnbQ4-GxPFrdILc4yt_TGN277do5fNgDthyphenhyphen0Zg2bp8-JltoRiHA9NJjTgFUa53xxUTm2gWWdIVipvfz7-ZbclvQqLRuzQkdGqPyulprPU8PUaS/s720/Untitled-2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; Among the things that led to the cat's fame was a photo story in Look Magazine (November 1962) by photographer Richard (Dick) Hewett. I met Dick Hewett nearly twenty years later, when his career was shifting from that of a magazine photographer to that of a children's book illustrator. I began working with Dick (I as a writer and Dick as a photographer) and together we published nearly fifty books, many of them about animals, Dick's specialty. Dick also collaborated with his wife, children's book writer Joan Hewett. Dick Hewett passed away in 2006. He would be pleased to know that his story about the cat in Room 8 is still being told.

<span face=""Segoe UI Historic","sans-serif"" style="color: #050505; font-size: 11.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">“Room 8” ( 1947–1968
