MY ART ON DISPLAY AT THE UCLA EMERITI/RETIREES ARTS AND CRAFTS EXHIBIT

On Tuesday, May 19th, I was
one of 23 artists exhibiting at the annual Silvia Winstein UCLA Emeriti/Retirees Arts and Crafts Exhibit at the UCLA University Club in Los Angeles, California. I showed prints of my cut-paper book illustrations. Many thanks to Chair Kay Deeney and all the people who make the event happen. This year's featured artists were Shirley Ho, calligraphist, and Craig Schoenbaum, photographer.

The tradition of the show began many years ago when Sylvia, the young widow of UCLA Chemistry Professor Saul Winstein, had a tea for some friends and displayed several paintings. Artistic emeriti friends and spouses were so enthusiastic that Sylvia organized and supported what has become a very special yearly celebration.

The event is  jointly presented by the UCLA Emeriti Association, the UCLA Emeriti/Retirees Relations Center, and the UCLA Retirees Association.

CONVERSATIONS WITH ART: Exhibit at Belmont Village Westwood, Los Angeles, CA

It was a pleasure to be part of the gala opening of the exhibit Conversations in Art at the Belmont Village Senior Living Westwood in Los Angeles today. I was one of twelve artists whose work is featured. Each of us had five minutes to tell a little bit about ourselves and our work, which ranged from paintings and drawings, to photography, calligraphy, jewelry and reimagined puzzles. I showed giclee prints of four illustrations from my Australian animal books—A KOALA’S WORLD, A KANGAROO’S WORLD, A PLATYPUS’ WORLD and A WOMBAT’S WORLD. I thank Alicia Thomason in Community Relations at the Belmont for doing an excellent job of organizing and hanging the exhibit.

Conversations with Art features works by UCLA Emeriti and Retirees. (I am a former instructor in the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program.) The exhibit is a collaboration of the Belmont Village Senior Living community with the UCLA Emeriti/Retirees Relations Center. It will be on display through February 2026 and can be viewed Monday-Sunday between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm. Belmont Village is at 10475 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90024.

CELEBRATING READ ACROSS AMERICA with a Zoom Author Visit at Calvert Elementary School, Los Angeles, CA

Last Wednesday morning (March 2nd) I did a very enjoyable Zoom author visit with kindergarten, first and second graders at Calvert Charter for Enriched Studies in Los Angeles, California, as part of their celebration of Read Across America. The students came into the school library for my presentation and sat on the raised seats in the story corner and watched me on a large screen. The school mascot is the koala, so I began by sharing my book A Koala's World and a photo of me holding a koala on one of my visits to Australia. I thank school librarian Sioux Renfro for inviting me and making all the technical arrangements for my presentation. It all worked perfectly! I also thank Access Books, which connected us, and which will supply the students with my books.

From the Read Across America website:

March 2 is National Read Across America Day, a day to celebrate our favorite activity. The day was established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998 to help get kids excited about reading. The day occurs each year on the birthday of beloved children’s book author Dr. Seuss, so a perfect way to celebrate is to don a Seussian hat and read one his famous tales, like One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. On National Read Across America Day, students, teachers, parents, and community members around the nation come together to read books and celebrate the joy of reading — join us!

New Print from Book Illustrations

Baby Koala’s First Climb
Limited Edition Giclee Print, Edition of 200. Signed and numbered.
Printed on archival paper. The art is 10 1/4 by 20 inches with a 1 inch white border.
The original illustration was created in cut paper collage for pages 12-13 of A Koala’s World, written and illustrated by Caroline Arnold, published by Picture Window Books, 2008.

I am in the process of having limited edition gallery quality prints made of some of the cut-paper illustrations I created for the books in the Caroline Arnold’s Animals series published by Picture Window Books. I have started with an illustration from A Koala’s World. The quality of the scan is impressive. Even though the paper is flat, it retains the three-dimensional quality of the layered paper of the original art.  To purchase a print of “Baby Koala’s First Climb”, go to www.carolinearnoldart.com for a link to my Etsy gallery.

I will add more art to this blog as I continue to have prints made of illustrations from the other books in the series. If you have a particular illustration that you would like to have a print of, please email me to let me know.
The following books are in the series.
Black and White Animals: A Panda’s World, A Penguin’s World, A Killer Whale’s World, and A Zebra’s World.
Australian Animals: A Koala’s World, A Kangaroo’s World, A Platypus’ World, and A Wombat’s World.
