MY ART ON DISPLAY AT THE UCLA EMERITI/RETIREES ARTS AND CRAFTS EXHIBIT

On Tuesday, May 19th, I was one of 23 artists exhibiting at the annual Silvia Winstein UCLA Emeriti/Retirees Arts and Crafts Exhibit at the UCLA University Club in Los Angeles, California. I showed prints of my cut-paper book illustrations. Many thanks to Chair Kay Deeney and all the people who make the event happen. This year's featured artists were Shirley Ho, calligraphist, and Craig Schoenbaum, photographer.

The tradition of the show began many years ago when Sylvia, the young widow of UCLA Chemistry Professor Saul Winstein, had a tea for some friends and displayed several paintings. Artistic emeriti friends and spouses were so enthusiastic that Sylvia organized and supported what has become a very special yearly celebration. 

The event is  jointly presented by the UCLA Emeriti Association, the UCLA Emeriti/Retirees Relations Center, and the UCLA Retirees Association.

ANIMAL PRINTS AT MY ETSY SITE: Perfect Gifts for the Holidays!

I have recently updated my Etsy site where I feature art quality giclee prints of the cut-paper illustrations from my children’s books. Printed to size (10 x 20 inches for rectangular images, and 10 x 10 inches for square images) they are perfect for framing and to give as gifts.

The prices have recently been reduced. There are 16 different designs available, depicting pandas, polar bears, walruses, eagles, moose, killer whales, kangaroos, koalas, platypuses, wombats, and zebras. Get them while they last!

An added feature this year was Art for Fire Victims in which artists donated pieces to give to people rebuilding their homes after the terrible fires of last January. I donated an illustration from my book A Koala's World.

CONVERSATIONS WITH ART: My Book Illustrations on Exhibit, Los Angeles, CA

On Thursday, November 14, I had the pleasure of participating in the opening reception for Conversations with Art, an art show at Belmont Village Senior Living in Los Angeles featuring works by UCLA Emeriti and Retirees. I was one of ten artists. Each of us had the opportunity to discuss our creations and inspiration.

Four giclee prints of illustrations from my animal books published by PictureWindow Books are on display, two from A Panda’s World and two from A Bald Eagle’s World. I talked about my beginnings as a children's book writer and illustrator and about the cut-paper technique that I use to create my art.

Conversations with Art is coordinated by Alicia Thomason at Belmont Village Senior Living and the Emeriti/Retirees Relations Center at UCLA. It will be up for the next three months at Belmont Village Senior Living located at 10475 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90024.

STORYWALK AT THE PARK: SATURDAY by Oge Mora, Los Angeles, CA

On a recent visit to my neighborhood library, the Palms-Rancho Park branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, I discovered a StoryWalk tale posted around the basketball court of the adjacent park. Hanging on the fence around the court were seventeen poster-size panels with pages from SATURDAY by Oge Mora, a charming picture book about a young girl, Ava, and her mother on a Saturday outing.

Because Ava’s mother works during the week, Saturday is the special day they spend together. As the story proceeds, we learn about their day.

What is your favorite day of the week? What makes it special?

The panels on the fence are conveniently hung at child level. Many of them include questions inviting children to engage with the story. Here are some of my favorites:

What have you done today? Can you tell the story of your day?

The book is illustrated with Oge Mora's charming cut-paper illustrations. In 2021 she was the featured speaker at the Children’s Literature Council of Southern California’s fall gala, held on Zoom that year because of the pandemic. I was fascinated to hear about her technique and see her studio, especially since I also have used cut-paper to illustrate some of my books. See my blog report HERE.

The StoryWalk Project was adapted for use by the Los Angeles Public Library with funding from the Library Foundation of Los Angeles.

VIRTUAL AUTHOR VISIT AT R.D. WHITE SCHOOL, Glendale, CA

 

Authors and Illustrators Day at R.D. White School, Glendale, CA, sponsored by the Glendale Assistance League

On November 4, 2022, I had an excellent Zoom author visit at R.D. White Elementary School in Glendale, California, as part of the Authors and Illustrators in the Schools program sponsored and organized by the Glendale Assistance League. I especially thank Linelle Vincenti and Kathy Blyth for all their support and making sure that everything ran smoothly. I was one of six authors at R.D. White on Friday. I met with four groups of first and second graders, each class for about forty minutes, sharing my books and my life as an author and answering questions from the students. I enjoyed it immensely. And I could tell that the teachers and kids enjoyed it too.

The theme of my presentation was gardens–featuring my new book PLANTING A GARDEN IN ROOM 6: From Seeds to Salad, as well as my fiction book WIGGLE AND WAGGLE (reading the first story and singing the gardening song with my Wiggle and Waggle sock puppets), and sharing my miniature garden inspired by Mr. McGregor’s garden in PETER RABBIT by Beatrix Potter.

I also talked about how authors get ideas for books, sharing that the inspiration for KEEPER OF THE LIGHT came out of a visit to Angel Island in San Francisco Bay. And I showed how I create the cut-paper illustrations for my books, using A ZEBRA’S WORLD as an example.

On February 28, 2022, I had an excellent author visit at Valley View Elementary School in Glendale, California, as part of the Authors and Illustrators in the Schools program sponsored and organized by the Glendale Assistance League. I met with four groups of first and second graders, each class for about forty minutes, sharing my books and my life as an author and answering questions from the students. I enjoyed it immensely. And I could tell that the teachers and kids enjoyed it too. One teacher wrote me at the end of the day: “Thank you so much for sharing! You were wonderful. The kids talked about you all day!”

The mascot of Valley View School is the Bald Eagle, and that prompted a discussion of my books about birds (including A BALD EAGLE’S WORLD and HATCHING CHICKS IN ROOM 6) and showing the children my collection of feathers and my ostrich egg. As a special treat, one of the teachers, who was Zooming from home, showed us her beautiful Umbrella Cockatoo, who erected her handsome crest and demonstrated how she can talk.
I also shared my illustration process, showing them how I do my cut-paper art for my book A ZEBRA’S WORLD.
Altogether, it was a full and satisfying day!
