I am trained as a fine artist, majoring in art at Grinnell College and then receiving my M.A. in studio art at the University of Iowa. For a number of years I worked as a teacher and practicing artist before turning to children's books. Then, after illustrating a few of my early books, I worked primarily as a writer. In 2004, I resumed my art career. Since then I have illustrated 18 books using a cut-paper collage technique, specializing in animals.
